Beautiful Original Watercolour believed to be of Greece

By Harrogate artist J Barrie Haste

Born in 1931 in the West Riding of Yorkshire, later living in Harrogate. Barrie’s early interest in art led him studying at Leeds College of Art. He continued his studies whilst serving in the RAF at Lincoln College.

Barrie has been greatly influenced by the painters of the Norwich School and has particular admiration for the work of Cotman and Turner. A great many hours too have been spent studying the work of Sir William Russell Flint. Together with his romantic free flowing style and a great sense of restraint needed for his architectural subjects, he produces

watercolour pieces which are always received with great critical acclaim.

Desolate beaches, Rome, Paris and London are amongst Barrie’s favourite subjects allowing him to apply his beautiful watercolour washes to excellent effect. Venice has long been Barrie’s favourite city inspiring some of his finest paintings. With his superb application of the watercolour medium he recreates the play of light on water and ancient stone with an expert hand. Barrie created beautiful and highly sought after landscapes, collected by a wide audience who appreciate and greatly admire his artistry.

Numerous successful one-man exhibitions around the UK have won him much critical acclaim, resulting in the submission of his works for the prestigious “Britain in Water-Colour” exhibition. His work may be seen hanging at the Royal Society of Marine Artists and can be found in many important collections: The Newburgh Priory Collection, Lord and Lady Deramore, Sire Donald Baron, Lady Bell, Sir Martin Becket. Prestigious corporate collectors include Rowntree Macintosh and Yorkshire Bank.

“I hope that my images express a feeling of optimism and joy at a time when we are all looking forward to a bright new future.”
