Beyond their regular La Liga campaign, Espanyol participated in the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Europa League, showcasing their prowess on both domestic and European fronts. The season, originally scheduled to run from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020, was extended exceptionally beyond the usual deadline of 30 June.

The leadership of the club underwent changes during the season. Chen Yansheng served as the President, overseeing the team's operations. In the coaching department, David Gallego started the season as the head coach but stepped down on 7 October. Pablo Machín took over the reins from 7 October to 23 December, followed by Abelardo, who managed the team from 27 December to 27 June.

Espanyol played their home matches at the RCDE Stadium, where fans witnessed the highs and lows of a season that ultimately ended in relegation. In La Liga, the team finished in 20th place, leading to their demotion to a lower division.

Their journey in the Copa del Rey saw them reach the Round of 32, while in the UEFA Europa League, they made it to the Round of 32 before facing elimination.

When it comes to goal-scoring contributions, several players stood out. In La Liga, Raúl de Tomás, Wu Lei, and David López each scored four goals. In all competitions, Facundo Ferreyra and Wu Lei were the top scorers, each netting eight goals.
