Sentry and Shackleton of No.8 Squadron

This picture portrays two generations of RAF airborne early warning aircraft flying together. The veteran Avro Shackleton AEW2, of which twelve were converted for No 8 Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth, served from January 1972 to 1991. It was replaced by the Boeing E-3D Sentry AEW1 which became fully operational with No 8 Squadron at RAF Waddington when the seventh and last aircraft was delivered in May I992.
