Eureka - "I Have Found It"

California was admitted into the Union on September 9, 1850, becoming America's 3 1st state. Authorized by the Congress of the United States, the California Quarter Dollar was issued by the United States Mint in January 2005. The obverse by John Flanagan depicts America's first president, George Washington. The reverse by Don Everhart portrays naturalist and conservationist John Muir admiring Yosemite Valley's monolithic granite headwall known as Half Dome. Soaring between the naturalist and the mountain is a California Condor. The coin bears the inscriptions "California," "John Muir," "Yosemite Valley" and "1850."

The California Quarter Dollars showcased in this historic cover are coins struck on the first day of minting - January 3, 2005. This official cover also bears the 37-cent United States Flag postage stamp. The postmark of January 31, 2005, Yosemite National Park, California, marks the day California Quarter Dollars were first released to the Federal Reserve Bank and the public, certifying this limited edition and honoring America's "Golden State."
