Description: Hardcover. 432. On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection is a work of scientific literature by Charles Darwin that is considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology. It was published in 1859 and introduced the scientific theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process of natural selection. It presented a body of evidence that the diversity of life arose by common descent through a branching pattern of evolution. Darwin included evidence that he had collected on the Beagle expedition in the 1830s and his subsequent findings from research, correspondence, and experimentation.

This copy is poor in contemporary vellum with the title hand-written on a paper label on the spine and gilt borders on the spine and both covers.. Unfortunately vellum does not often age well, and this binding shows soiling and boards are warping. The front board is partly separated but holding. There is a 1.5" chip missing at the top of the spine. It appears that the volume was likely a custom bound copy of the softcover edition of the same year, but it was bound without the original wrappers if that is the case. The text however, is quite clean and in good condition, including the foldout chart.
