1971 Royal Mint Proof Coinage of Ceylon

This 7-coin set displays and protects these special Ceylon coins of 1971 in a rigid perspex display case housed in a card wallet from The Royal Mint. Each coin is specially struck in polished dies, giving a mirror finish to the fields and devices, far superior to the finish given to coins intended for general circulation.

The set was issued 100 years after the declaration by Ceylon that it would adopt a decimal currency in place of the British currency in use at the time of pounds, shillings and pence. It was also the year before Ceylon declared itself the Republic of Sri Lanka.

Quite a historic set for those reasons, and only 5,000 sets were issued by the Royal Mint.

The set, case, information leaflet and wallet outer are all in excellent condition.
