Publisher's red cloth pictorially blocked in black, with titles in gilt to spine and black to upper, and light yellow-coated endpapers. Catalogue dated 5G.1.86, final text leaf (p.320) is coded 20.286. Black ink ownership to half-title, and a minor repair to map with archival tape. Light toning and occasional spotting throughout. Re-cased with splits to hinges and a lean. Moderate general wear to cloth, with some toning to spine. Good. The first of the famous Allan Quatermain tales, inspired by the huge success of Stevenson's 'Treasure Island' (1883). Following a map drawn 300 years ago by a dying man, three adventurers set out in search of the legendary riches of King Solomon's diamond mines. On their journey they have to cross deserts, mountains and inhabitants that kill strangers. Will they make the journey and become the richest men on Earth? First published in 1885.
