VICTOR VICTORIA opened on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre October 25, 1995. It played 25 previews and 734 performances before closing on July 27, 1997. Julie won a Tony and Drama Desk Award for Leading Actress in a Musical. It was based on Blake Edwards' 1982 film, which starred Julie, James Garner and Robert Preston. She played a soprano whose career was flagging, so she changed things up and acheived success playing a female male impersonator, but it complicated her personal life. Hubby Blake Edwards wrote the script based on a German musical. It was a real change of pace for super wholesome Julie, but she loved it, as did critics and most of her fans. It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards, including Best Actress (Julie), Supporting Actor (Preston), Supporting Actress (Leslie Ann Warren), Adapted Screenplay (Edwards), Art/Set Design, and Costume Design. It won for Best Music - Original Song Score (Mancini and Bricusse). It was also nominated for 5 Grammy Awards, with Julie winning Best Leading Actress - Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. The risque subject matter wowed foreign critics and it won top awards in the U.K., France and Italy. FYI, I acquired it at the Hollywood Hills estate sale of Ian Fraser's widow. He was a famous British Music Director and Vocal Arranger who performed those roles on the show. He was a longtime friend and collaborator who won Emmy Awards for 2 Julie Andrews TV specials and directed her only Hollywood Bowl Performance.
