Flak & Barbed Wire Wake of the Wuppertal Australian Story of Escape by G Stooke

RAAF Airman Gordon Stooke WW2 Story with 460 Sqn Bomber Command. Stooke was of pilot of a Lancaster bomber flying as a member of 460 squadron RAAF out of Binbrook UK. On his 10th raid over Germany in 1943, his Lancaster was shot down by anti-aircraft fire. After several weeks on the run he was captured by the Gestapo. What followed was a series of prisons and camps where the prisoners fought against hunger, cold before liberation.
The risk to the aircrew as part of 460 Squadron went something like this, only 3% of the Australian men who enlisted during World War II were trained as air crew and posted to the UK. Yet from this small group, 39% of all Australian casualties occurred with 1000 of them coming from the 460 Squadron.
