The British Aerospace Harrier II is a British-made V/STOL capable attack aircraft. It is the second generation of the Harrier. It was used by the Royal Air Force (1989-2011) and by the Royal Navy (2006-2010). Developed from the Hawker Siddeley Harrier, it was produced as the Harrier GR.5, Harrier GR.7 and Harrier GR.9,n. 1closely related to the American-made McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II. Both were used primarily for light attack or multi-role duties, and typically operated from small aircraft carriers. The Harrier II was the victim of a UK defense spending review which saw all active aircraft withdrawn from service in December 2010.
