"The brand Holland Gin most of us bottle collectors are familiar with is Udolpho Wolfe’s Aromatic Schiedam Schnapps. Udolpho Wolfe was one of the most prominent and highly esteemed merchants of New York. He was of German descent, his father, Benjamin Wolfe, having emigrated to Virginia in 1774. During the Revolutionary War. Benjamin Wolfe served under General George Washington and reached the rank of Major. In 1812 he again joined the army and had command of the troops in Richmond. Udolpho Wolfe was born in Richmond, Virginia and received his education from Charlottesville, and came to New York in 1825. He commenced business in New York in 1826 and for many years was extensively engaged in the importation of wines and liquors. In 1848, Mr. Wolfe first introduced into this country the brand of gin which has since required such unprecedented popularity, under the name of Aromatic Schiedam Schnapps. It was made at his own distilleries at Schiedam, Holland, a city long famous for its production in this line. Udolpho Wolfe died 14 Sept. 1869 and in January 1872, the business of the house was reorganized under the corporate name Udolpho Wolfe Co., of which David H. Burke was the president. Burke was the brother-in-law of Udolpho Wolfe and was associated with him in business for 15 years." Credit to Ferdinand Meyer. This particular bottle is machine made and among the last produced by this company. It is 7-1/2" tall and marked with a backward 5 in the Owen ring on the base. You can see it in correct position by looking through the mouth. I believe this company went out of business in the USA with prohibition in 1920, though it probably continued with its customers around the world as the Udolpho Wolfe Co. owned its own distillery in the Netherlands and I see bottles like this originating in Australia. "A superlative Tonic, Diuretic, Anti-Dyspeptic and invigorating Cordial. This medical diet-drink is manufactured solely by the proprietor at his distillery, in Schiedam, in Holland, expressly for medicinal purposes. It is the pure tincture of juniper, distilled from the best barley that can be selected in Europe at any cost. It is flavored and medicated, not by the common harsh berry, but by the choice botanical variety of the aromatic Italian juniper berry, whose more vinous extract is distilled and rectified with its spirituous solvent, and thus it becomes a concentrated tincture of exquisite flavor and aroma, altogether transcendent in Its cordial and medicinal properties to any alcoholic stimulant now in use In the world." (1859). "Wolfe's Schnapps is now distilled in Australia from the original formula of Udolpho Wolfe. It remains, as before, a beverage of unique medicinal properties — Appetizing, Refreshing, Stimulating — as good for women as for men. -Wolfe's 'Schnapps for your health's sake", FOR VICTORY-buy War Bonds Now." (1941). "Wolfe’s manufacturing and bottling house in HamburgGermany, serviced all parts of the world except the United States.  The schnapps destined for the American market was distilled in SchiedamHolland, and shipped in bulk to be bottled only for the U.S. market.  It should be noted that Wolfe’s Schnapps was possibly the most imitated bottled product known."
