This is for an original ticket stub from the July 4 1957 doubleheader between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Game one would see the Yankees take a 2-1 lead into the ninth inning, but Bobby Shantz, who had pitched a strong 8 innings would be pulled for reliever Bob Grim. Grim would proceed to allow a single to Frank Malzone and a pinch hit homer to Mickey Vernon to hand the Sox a 3-2 win. The second game would see Don Larsen pitch a complete game 5 hitter with the only run allowed being a solo homer by Mickey Vernon for a 4-1 Yankee win. Mickey Mantle entered the game hitting .377 so the Sox thought if anyone was going to beat them it wouldn’t be Mantle. The Mick would go 0-1 with 3 walks in game one and 0-0 with 3 walks and 2 runs scored in game 2. Max Bishop twice walked 8 times in a doubleheader, once with the Philadelphia A’s in 1930 and once with Boston Red Sox in 1934. Other than those 2 occasions the Major League record for walks in a doubleheader is 6. Tony Kubek came in for Mantle in the top of the sixth in game 2 and singled in the bottom of the seventh or Mickey could have drawn 7 walks. Who knows? A nice stub from the days when every Yankee game was a momentous occasion. A must have for any Mantle collector.
