Frequently Asked Questions

Eliminate the hard water that causes scale build up and iron that causes red staining with a single system powered by the Fleck 5600SXT digital valve!
Removes Hard Water - Using the ion exchange process (more on that at right) this system removes the calcium and magnesium ions that cause hard water. By eliminating hard water you extend the life of your homes plumbing and appliances!
Eliminates Scale Buildup - Hard water causes a white flaky build up (called scale) to form on appliances, faucets, and just about anything that it comes in regular contact with. By removing the hard water, this scale build up is stopped in it's tracks, so you don't have to worry about scrubbing it off any more. In addition, without the added wear and tear of scale buildup, your appliances and fixtures will last longer!
Reduces Soap Usage - The calcium and magnesium ions that comprise hard water attract soap molecules, leaving less soap to do the cleaning. With those ions gone, your soap and detergents can focus entirely on cleaning, meaning less soap will be required once the water has been softener.
Removes Ferrous Iron - Through the same ion exchange process that removes the hard water, this system is able to remove ferrous (clear water) iron. Iron is a common contaminate and is commonly seen as red or orange rust stains on toilets, sinks, and tubs. It can also cause stains in your clothes and even hair!
Removes Manganese - Manganese is also removable though the ion exchange process. Manganese is commonly seen as a black "slimy" stain or build up.
Meter Based Regeneration - This system uses a meter based regeneration process. This means that the water you use is measured and the system only regenerates when it needs to. If water needs increase the system regenerates more often to keep up. If less water is being used, the system regenerates less often to conserve water. This provides a system that is much more efficient and eco-friendly than common time based regeneration systems.
Fleck 5600 "On-Demand" Control - The basic, low cost controller from Fleck that has been around for generations! This tried and true valve has an outstanding 5 year warranty and has been tested to run continuously up to 27 years! Simplicity and function come together at an affordable price.
¾" Bypass Valve - The included stainless steel bypass valve allows for easy connection of the system and provides a quick and easy means to bypass the system and disconnect the system without needing to cut your plumbing. ¾" is available.
Structural USA Tank - Durable polyglass tank is made by one of the most popular manufacturer of tanks and comes with a 10 year warranty. *Note: Design & color may vary from the one shown.
Standard Square Brine Tank - The brine tanks stores the salt required for regeneration. The standard square brine tank included with this system is approximately 15"x17"x33" and can hold about 250 lbs. of pelleted salt. The included safety float prevents overfilling and the overflow drain acts as an additional backup to avoid water messes. *Note: Design & color may vary from the one shown.
1 ft.³ Fine Mesh Resin - We use a high quality fine mesh resin in our Iron Pro systems. The fine mesh resin is specifically designed for iron removal and will provide better results and last longer than standard softening resin in the presence of iron. This system has a capacity of 32,000 (or 32k) grains, meaning it can remove 32,000 grains of hardness, and can treat a maximum flow rate of 8GPM. More information on capacity, grains of hardness, flow rates, and sizing can be found at right.
DIY Installation - We provide detailed installation instructions that allow most homeowners to install this system themselves. All it takes is some basic plumbing skills and some common knowledge! If you don't feel confident installing it yourself most plumbers can install it in about 1-2 hours.
Important Note: These systems are designed for lower flow rates and/or lower iron/manganese/hardness levels. If you have high flow demands and/or high levels of iron/manganese/hardness, we recommend a separate iron/manganese filter followed by a standard water softener.

Q. What is a water softener?A. A water softener is a special filter that uses a process called ion-exchange to remove water hardness, also know as CaCO3, from your water. The fine mesh resin is able to remove iron and manganese by the same process. As the water passes through the softener, univalent sodium or potassium ions on the softening resin exchange with divalent calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese ions in the water, eliminating those contaminants. Eventually the media in the softener (called softening resin) has exchanged all of its sodium or potassium ions, at which point it will no longer be able to remove any more contaminates. This is why the system regenerates. During this process the system runs a brine solution (water and either sodium or potassium chloride) backwards through the softening resin. This concentrated solution forces the trapped ions off the resin and down the drain, replacing them with the sodium or potassium ions needed for softening. With the Fleck control heads, this process is automatic, and only as needed!

Q. What does the grain capacity mean?A. Water hardness is usually measured in grains per gallon (gpg). (Some places use parts per million [ppm] or milligrams per liter [mg/L]. To convert your ppm or mg/L to gpg simply divide by 17.1 [Example - 200ppm or mg/L is equal to 200 / 17.1 = 11.7gpg]) When using a system to remove iron or manganese you will need to calculate the compensated hardness. To calculate your compensated hardness use the following formula: Hardness (in gpg) + (iron x 4) + (manganese x 2) = compensated hardness. For example, if you have 10gpg hardness, 2ppm iron, & 1ppm manganese your compensated hardness would be 10 + (2x4) + (1x2) = 10 + 8 + 2 = 20gpg. The grain capacity of a system is how many grains of hardness your system can remove before it needs regenerated. A 32,000 grain or 32k water softener will remove 32,000 grains of compensated hardness. From that you can determine how many gallons of water you can go through between regenerations. If you have a 32k softener and your water is 20gpg hard, you can go through 32,000/20=1,600 gallons of water before your system is exhausted and needs regenerated.

Q. What size system do I need?A. There are 2 main factors in determining the size you need: water usage and water hardness. Here is a general guideline on sizing your system:

32k system - 1-2 people, average water use and low hardness (under 15gpg)
48k system - 3-5 people with average water use or moderate hardness (15-45gpg)(Contact us for pricing)
64k system - 5-7 people with average water use or high hardness (45-65gpg)
Service Flow Rate is the maximum amount of water, in gallons per minute (gpm) that a given system can effectively treat. Always size a system based on water usage first, a system undersized for your water usage may not always filter effectively and will wear out faster. Please calculate compensated hardness before comparing with suggested hardness levels shown.

Q. Are there systems that don't use salt?A. Yes & no. Yes, we have a system that eliminates hard water problems without the use of salt, and there are systems that remove iron & manganese without the use of salt or chemicals, however, the Iron Pro system is the only system we carry that treats both. For salt free water conditioning, our Scale Sentry system utilizes a specialized media to provide the same benefits a standard softener offers without the use of salt. In addition, beneficial minerals are left in the water and existing scale is removed as well! For chemical free iron, sulfur, & manganese removal, we offer a number of iron filters that do not require any chemical regenerates.

Q. Should I be concerned about the salt a water softener puts in my water?A. No. The amount of salt put into your water by a water softener is minimal. In fact, in most cases it is low enough that water ran through a softener is still considered "low-sodium" by the FDA. If you want to avoid adding additional sodium to the water all our water softeners can be used with potassium chloride instead of the traditional sodium chloride. If you want to safe drinking water, our drinking water RO systems can turn your ordinary household water into bottled quality drinking water.

Q. What are the differences in the Fleck models 5600, 5600SXT control heads?A. The Fleck 5600 is your basic mechanical control valve. It does it's job in the most cost effective way possible. It is a metered head so it measures how much water you go through and regenerates based water usage. Due to the mechanical limitations on the head it can only be set to 2100 gallons, at that point it has to regenerate, so some efficiency can be lost depending on the system size and your water hardness. This head is ideal if you are looking for the lowest cost option. The Fleck 5600SXT works similar to the standard 5600 but uses a digital interface instead of a mechanical one. This makes setup easier, and with the digital control it can be set to go through up to 9,999 gallons of water between regenerations. The 5600SXT can be more efficient that the 5600 because of this, especially in larger homes with lower hardness levels. The other advantage the 5600SXT has is adjustable regeneration cycles, while in most cases these settings won't need to be adjusted, with the 5600SXT the option is there should you ever need it.

Q. What kind of maintenance does this system require?A. The only regular maintenance a water softener requires is adding salt to the brine tank, and occasionally cleaning the brine tank.
