This is a beautifully hand crafted mid-19th century American coin silver teapot.

Made by the Jones, Ball & Poor Company, predecessors to the highly regarded Shreve, Crump & Low Company of Boston.

Masterfully executed in bulbous form with an elegantly flared, ruffled rim.

This solid coin silver teapot is raised on three decorative paw form feet. Each foot is beautifully cast with an ornamental acanthus leaf where it meets the body. The applied acanthus leaf is nicely engraved and framed with lovely hand chasing.

The scroll form handle is also adorned with highly detailed acanthus leaves that were cast separately and applied.

The hinged domed cover is topped with an unusual, deeply grooved, spiral form finial.

The side of the pot is engraved with the old, original presentation to, ‘Susan C. Lawrence’. The underside of the pot is engraved with the date, ‘July 16th 1849’.

The teapot is stamped twice on the underside of the base with PURE COIN. It is also marked with a maker’s mark for Jones, Ball & Poor. The mark is largely worn, but as you can see in the photograph the letter J is visible at the beginning of the mark if you look closely. The letters ‘& PO’ are also clearly discernible. This is definitely the work of Jones, Ball & Poor. The company was only in business under this name between 1846 and 1853, and the engraved date of 1849 corresponds perfectly with this time period.

The teapot has surface wear commensurate with age and use as well as on dent on the back of the piece at the widest point. This dent could easily be removed if so desired. There are some small chips to the carved dark wood insulators. It is only noticeable upon close inspection. The handle is tight to the body and very sturdy. The teapot has been tested, and it does hold water. There are no leaks. There are no other dents, no splits, no monogram removals, and no repairs.

The teapot measures 8 5/8 inches from handle to spout and stands 7 3/8 inches tall.

The weight is 625 grams or 21.9 ounces.
