This early pewter tankard could have been made for use in a tavern or owned by a cleric or minor land owner.  The cylindrical form indicates it was made more than 300 years ago, sometime in the 18th century.  The handle shape suggests the origin might have been Northern Europe or Scandinavia. It is marked but it is difficult to read.  Mark seems to be a crown topped with a small cross on an orb and a fleur de lis on a crown; below the crown it looks like a primitive horse or sheep (several photos of the mark are included). Measures about 6 ¾ in. tall, it is 8 in. from base to top of hinge; opening is 3 ¾ in., base is 4 in.. Expected toning; minor shallow dent on one side.
