Antique Double Violin Case Georgian Style

 Old Hardware

Possibly English Origination

Item Description

Here is a nice well made Antique Double Violin Case in Georgian Style for your buying consideration.  Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep for yourself!  We do not observe an antique double violin case currently being offered thru this online store site when we listed it.

You do not find older violin cases like this very often.  The violin case was probably made in the late 1800s to early 1900s, could be a bit older than that.  The wood veneer appears to be a burled walnut or tiger maple.  Our guess is that the violin case is of English origination looking at the brass hardware that still remains.   The violin case is ready to be refurbished/restored to its' former glory.

This Antique Double Violin Case is being offered to you at a price below what you might see in a high end auction house or art gallery, as we have been selling artwork out of our home for over 35 years.  We can therefore better control our acquisition costs, keep commission costs low (if applicable), and finally, we don't have the overhead that the higher end houses and art galleries experience.

There is no label inside of the case or impressed on the case that identifies the maker.   Also, no markings on the silver colored hardware.  Great silver colored latches on the sides, both the hasp and the latch are there.  There is a lock, no key.  Appears the locking mechanism may go to two brass points that are each 5.5" away on either side from the key hole, quite unique.  The silver colored handle is in place on top of the case as well.  There is a brass escucheon on the top of the case, nothing is engraved on it.  The three thick brass hinges that secure the top to the base are in place.  Some of the screws are missing, and some of the screws are definitely not original.

The pictures do not do justice to the beauty of this violin case.  Nice darker reddish brown stain on the entire violin case.   The arched top to the case is intact, some cracks splits or repairs over it's 100 plus years of life to the top and the base, see pics.

The finish is some sort of veneer.  Some minor finish loss and minor nicks over the years to the violin case.  Some pieces of the veneer are missing.  Some old repairs can be observed.

Old insides still in the case.  Paper wall paper in the top and up where the neck and scroll go.  An old pinkish felt that has worn away where the violin body would sit in and in the top.  The wood slide to lock the violins down is still inside the case.  The two violin holders are in place on the inside of the top as well.

The bottom of the violin case appears intact, has old felt on it, and some newer metal button legs.

The violin case is 30-15/16" long, by 6-5/8" tall, by 12" across at the widest point.  Ready to be refurbished and brought back to it's former glory.  Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.

The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well.  With old items, there is no way one can capture all the little imperfections in words, so the two media are meant to be the full description.
