👑 Description: The front side of the lithograph depicts a seated figure with traditional attire, including jewelry and headgear. The background features an abstract pattern that adds depth to the composition. The artist’s signature “COVARRUBIAS” is visible at the bottom right corner of the lithograph. The back side of the lithograph Foulah Chief depicts two individuals; one is standing, holding a spear, and another is sitting. Both individuals are wearing robes; the standing individual’s robe is plain while the sitting one has a checkered pattern at the bottom. The background features minimalistic design elements, with lines creating a sense of depth.


👨‍🎨 Artist Bio: Miguel Covarrubias (1904-1957) was a Mexican painter, caricaturist, illustrator, ethnologist, and art historian. Along with his American colleague Matthew W. Stirling, he was the co-discoverer of the Olmec civilization. Covarrubias’s caricatures and illustrations have been featured in The New Yorker and Vanity Fair magazines. He was also a designer of sets and costumes for the theater, including Caroline Dudley Reagan’s La Revue Negre starring Josephine Baker.
