Jules Pascin was a Bulgarian-born American painter who was known for his expressive portraits and nudes. He was part of the School of Paris, a group of emigre artists who worked in the French capital in the early 20th century. He had a bohemian lifestyle and struggled with depression and alcoholism. He committed suicide in 1930, on the eve of an important solo exhibition, at age 45.
