Vintage American Country Style 2-Drawer Hall Table, Console Table or Side Table by Hitchcock of Connecticut

Grab a slice of Americana!

This attractive and characterful mid-century console table or side table was made in the 1970s by the Hitchcock Chair Company, reproducing – in the same Riverton, Connecticut location – the farmhouse, rustic, country style furniture of the original 19th century company of the same name, founded by Lambert Hitchcock.

The table has a lovely patina, with the signs of wear and natural colour changes to the frame (highlighted in the images) giving the item great character and warmth. In particular, the yellowing in the painted surface of the frame is caused by amber in the lacquer finish; this reacts to sunlight over the years, yellowing the paint, and is a deliberate ageing technique. The brass and porcelain drawer knobs with an eagle emblem are a traditional design by Hitchcock.

The hand-stencilling to the top, frame and drawer fronts is original, as is the branding on the back, which refers to “Hitchcocks-ville” – the local name given in the 19th century to the town that grew around Lambert Hitchcock’s factory. The two drawers are lined with reproductions of pages from a December 1832 edition of the “Connecticut Courant” (now the Hartford Courant - the oldest continuously-published newspaper in the US).

Please see the images in close-up to check the table’s condition.
