      War ein deutscher Kunsttheoretiker und -sammler, Schriftsteller und Übersetzer, außerdem Amateurstecher und Diplomat im sächsischen Dienst. Er war vor allem als Dichter und Herausgeber bekannt und war einer der führenden Vertreter der sogenannten "Hamburger Aufklärung", einer literarischen Bewegung, die sich dem Rationalismus und der Aufklärung verpflichtet fühlte. Sein bekanntestes Werk ist wahrscheinlich die "Moralischen Wochenstuben" (1729-1730), eine Sammlung von moralischen Betrachtungen und Gedichten.

      Was a German art theorist and collector, writer and translator, as well as an amateur engraver and diplomat in the Saxon service. He was primarily known as a poet and editor and was one of the leading representatives of the so-called "Hamburg Enlightenment", a literary movement committed to rationalism and the Enlightenment. His best-known work is probably the "Moralische Wochenstuben" (1729-1730), a collection of moral reflections and poems.
