  • Beschreibung: Auf eine Raumecke begrenzt sehen wir Mutter und Kinder häkelnd mit gesenktem Kopf und Nadelarbeiten auf dem Schoß beieinandersitzen. In sich versunken widmet sich jedes Familienmitglied seiner Handarbeit. Es ist so still, dass wir eine Wanduhr ticken oder das Feuer im Kamin knistern hören könnten. Eine friedliche Ruhe und familiäre Wärme strahlt diese Interieurszene aus, die auch farblich durch die warmen Ockertöne in der Patchworkdecke und dem Fußboden betont wird. Ferdinand Balzer (1872 Frankfurt - 1916 ebd.) ist bekannt für seine figürlichen Szenen aus der Alltags- und Arbeitswelt sowie Landschaften aus dem Taunus und seiner hessischen Heimat. 1892 studierte er Malerei bei Anton Burger in Kronberg, 1893-97 an der Kunstschule Weimar und 1898/99 an der Städelschule bei Wilhelm Amadeus Beer. War er anfangs der Frankfurter Schule verbunden, so öffnete er sich später neuen Strömungen, wie der impressionistischen Stilistik Wilhelm Trübners. Um die Jahrhundertwende begann er formale Elemente aus dem Symbolismus und Jugendstil aufzugreifen.

  • Description: Confined to a corner of the room, we see mother and children crocheting together with their heads bowed and needlework on their laps. Absorbed in themselves, each family member devotes himself to his handiwork. It is so quiet that we could hear a wall clock ticking or the fire crackling in the fireplace. This interior scene radiates a peaceful tranquillity and familial warmth, which is also emphasised by the warm ochre tones in the patchwork ceiling and the floor. Ferdinand Balzer (1872 Frankfurt - 1916 ibid.) is known for his figurative scenes from everyday life and work as well as landscapes from the Taunus and his Hessian homeland. In 1892 he studied painting with Anton Burger in Kronberg, 1893-97 at the art school in Weimar and 1898/99 at the Städelschule with Wilhelm Amadeus Beer. While he was initially associated with the Frankfurt School, he later opened up to new trends, such as the Impressionist style of Wilhelm Trübner. Around the turn of the century, he began to pick up formal elements from Symbolism and Art Nouveau.
