My CDs are either immaculate or have wear and tear surface scratches. I always handle my CDs with care and attention. Accidents do happen and then there are friends you lend them to. They used to play with no issues. Some have a lot of surface scratches due to their age whilst being played very often but usually play with a good quality CD player. All my CD cases are original even if they are broken.
