For sale is a fun piece - a figural pastille or incense burner made by Niderviller around 1800. The one here is of a gentleman figurine - presumably the husband of the matching lady figure I also have on the site. He is dressed in a Turkish / Ottoman Empire sort of dress with a hat covering his head while holding a pipe i both hands and a bundle of some sort by his feet on on a rock work base with the gold trim around the edge which is typical for this maker. From what I can see on the inside the smoke from the incense would come out of both the ipe bowl as well as a tiny hole in his mouth. The incense part can be seen from the back where there is an opening under his dress with a little pin on the bottom to stick the pastille on. These types of burners were used around this time since houses and places often smelled quite badly and the incense was used to cover it up a bit. It is rare to find a figural one and I had never seen one by this maker though now I own five of them after collecting them for a while. Really quite nice! The piece is in good condition with the mouth piece of the pipe in his left hand missing, some minor repairs ot his hat and I think his neck was broken at some point and repaired perfectly but it is impossible to tell. A superb job! He displays very well! As is the case with most of their figurines the piece is unmarked except for a red 4. inside the pastille burner opening.
