On the evening of May 25, 1887, during a performance of Mignon (comic opera by Ambroise Thomas), the Salle Favart caught fire. It's a real disaster: hundreds of victims, a room in ruins. In Paris, but also throughout Europe, there is emotion. The City of Paris pays tribute to the victims of this evening with a ceremony at Notre-Dame then a monument dedicated to the Père Lachaise cemetery. It is also a whole page of spectacle history that burns with the hall: built in 1840, it saw the creation of La Damnation de Faust (Berlioz), Mignon (Thomas), Carmen (Bizet), Les Contes d' Hoffman (Offenbach), Lakmé (Delibes), Manon (Massenet)… so many emblematic titles from the Opéra Comique repertoire.
