For sale is a figurine of a lady made by Derby in about
1756-60.
The figure is very well modeled and quite beautifully hand painted
especially her skirt! She is likely one of a set of figurines - the
senses - this one being hearing. She is playing a mandolin (or something
along those lines) while sitting on a tree stump with flowers by her
feet and she is quite early for Derby. Amazing how they got all this
superb detail into a small figurine! The figurine is in amazing
condition considering its age! The orange flower to her left side is a
bit chipped which is not obvious at all and there is a firing flaw on
the back by the stump on the base where it was probably stuck onto
another piece but it is from the making and painted over and no big
deal. The ends of the bow on her hat are chipped which is also not
obvious at all. Her left foot was restored perfectly! So all in all as
perfect as you will find a piece from this era. The figurine is unmarked
underneath but that's common as well but she does have the typical
underside with a light patchmark. The figurine is 4.75 inches tall, 3.5
inches wide and 2.25 inches deep. 18th century
