This book was written by the grandson of John H. W. Hawkins, one of the primary founders of the Washingtonians. He and his buddies were sitting at Chase's Tavern in Baltimore back on April 2, 1840. They actually came up with the name from naming after George Washington, although I'm not sure why. I guess they might have had a few. But upon creation, they began to live sober and free of alcohol and the rest is history. Although they failed for various reasons, it was a grand attempt I think and we here in AA even borrowed some of their history to learn part of out Traditions. So thank you Mr. Hawkins.
As for the book, it's only a reading copy and the boards are a bit loose and the spine cover is coming loose too. Pages are old and foxing and in poor condition. But, a very readable book. And even in the Preface, his grandson names off the men who started this Movement with grand intentions. I have cropped that text so you could see their names. Today is April 2nd, the Washingtonians184th birthday.
Anyway, please email with any questions.
