Olivine is an olive-green, grey-green, or brown mineral occurring widely in basalt, peridotite, and other basic igneous rocks. It is a silicate containing varying proportions of magnesium, iron, and other elements.a magnesium iron silicate. End members are forsterite  and fayalite. Olivine is an abundant mineral in most mafic igneous rocks and the most abundant mineral in the earth’s upper mantle. It has an orthorhombic crystal system.

The olivine group is commonly found in igneous rock and basalts. It is mined for the gem peridot. Olivine is vulnerable to weathering and is not commonly found in soil, despite the igneous parent material. Olivine has been discovered on the surface of Mars.
