Very rare 16th century religious book, mystical work by Friar Frans Vervoort  (1490-1555). He discusses the suffering of Christ in 40 day journeys. Richly illustrated with 25 woodcuts, in beautiful original binding.



Original Title in Dutch: "De woestijne des Heeren: leerende hoe een goet kersten mensche, Christum, dlicht der waerheyt sal na-volghen in dese duyster woestijne des bedroefder werelts, in alle deuchden der volmaecktheyt", by Jan Maes, ende Peeter Fabri, 1586 -  Antwerpen, Hans van Liesveldt, woonende op die Cammerpoortbrugghe, inden Schildt van Artoys, 1586 - [1st edition 1551]


Title loosely translated: " The Desert of the Lord: learning how a good Christian man, Christ, will follow the light of truth in the dark desert of the sadder world, in all the virtues of perfection."



Hardcover original boards rebacked on brown leather binding. Mystical work by Frans Vervoort Friar (1490-1555). He discusses the suffering of Christ in 40 day journeys. Most of his works were published anonymously, but can always be attributed to Vervoort because of his saying at the end "O heer when". Good condition of the beautiful printing.Complete, solid. First and last folio mediocre, secured with Japanese paper. Otherwise untouched, complete prologue, followed by 299 folia. In the blind stamped leather binding we recognize roman emperors and mythological figures....


All 25 woodcuts present. Some (not unusual) are used twice. Some sections at the front are partially loose. More pictures on request. Corner pieces can be easily removed without damage. Very scarce. 438 years old !!
