Presented is an exceptional quality colonial American coin silver cann or mug, made by Benjamin Burt and dating to circa the 1760s-1770s. The cup is beautifully made in a classical balustroid form with a double c scroll handle and round foot. The silver is a thick, heavy gauge, and the piece is overall very well made. The front of the cup, opposite the handle, has a nicely engraved monogram of BAN in flowing, foliate decorated script. A wonderful and early piece of American silver.

The cup is stamped on the side beneath the rim with a maker's mark of B. Burt for Benjamin Burt (b. 1729-d. 1805), the son of John Burt, both well known Boston silversmiths.

This piece is in great overall condition, particularly considering its age. There is an old solder repair to the top juncture of the handle to the body, which you can see pointed out in the eighth and ninth photographs (interior and exterior). There is also an old solder repair to the underside of the foot, which is quite hard to notice due to the location. There is a tiny dent about an inch below the monogram, though this is quite small. There are no other repairs, no other dents, and no monogram removals. Any black or dark spots you see are just reflections of the photography equipment or room in which the piece was photographed.

The cup stands about 4 7/8 inches tall at the tallest point and measures about 5 1/2 inches from handle to opposite side, or about 3 1/2 inches in diameter without the handle. The cup has a capacity of ??

The cup weighs 311 grams or 11 regular ounces.
