HO Scale Blue Central Pacific Railroad Jupiter 4-4-0 Steam Locomotive #51124 in Box w/ Sound Chip
Upon my father's passing, I received his collection of model train cars and locomotives. While most of them were damaged or broken, one locomotive, a Virginia & Truckee Railroad Genoa 4-4-0, was in good condition requiring some repairs. After successfully restoring it to functionality, I discovered an interest in restoring model locomotives. Since then, I acquire broken / damaged model steam locomotives of the 2-4-0 and 4-4-0 style and restore them to working order, as close to the condition they were when new so others can add these restored locomotives to their collections.
I've noticed some sellers state in their auctions: "As-Is. Untested, do not know if works" which is another way of saying, "I don't have the knowledge, means or desire to check to see if this locomotive works, but please buy it." That's not suggesting they're trying to sell you something false, but seriously...you want to know if the locomotive works when you're receiving it, right? So I do all I can to get these locomotives working before offering them for sale. If something doesn't work, I'll state it in the description so you know.
You could call me the Used Salesman of Model Locomotives...just without the fancy gimmicks!
Bachmann Blue Central Pacific Jupiter (CPRR) 4-4-0 Steam Locomotive / Tender #51124
The Central Pacific Jupiter 4-4-0 Locomotive was released years ago in a candy-apple red and silver color scheme with gold and black highlights. Since then, additional variations and colors have been released for different railroad lines. One popular version is the #51124 Blue Central Pacific Jupiter 4-4-0. Instead of the bright red, it is painted royal blue.
What are you getting?
As the title states, you're bidding on a Blue Central Pacific HO Scale 4-4-0 Bachmann Jupiter steam locomotive. However, there are a few things you should know...I acquired this locomotive from someone who indicated they couldn't get it to run. Part of the reason was that it was lacking a drive shaft, but even then, it had issues. Upon inspection of the tender car, I discovered that an attempt was made to add a SoundTraxx sound chip to the tender, apparently to try to add sound effects to this locomotive. After removing the chip and wiring, and returning it to it's standard condition, the tender worked fine.
- Pilot / Cow-catcher: molded in blue plastic. No damaged visible upon inspection
- Front lantern: Original and intact (not a replica)
- Light FUNCTIONS (see video for confirmation) Bright and strong.
- Replacement drive shaft provides power from the tender motor to the locomotive.
- Original wiring linking the locomotive and the tender car is intact and soldering has been checked.
- Metal hand rails connecting the boiler to the pilot are in place.
- Handrails and stanchions along either side of the boiler are all in place, cleaned and polished.
- Smoke stack is secure and undamaged.
- Bell is original
- Two domes atop the boiler are intact and in place, Whistle atop the third dome is present and intact (usually missing on used locomotives)
- Engineering cabin is a rich blue colored plastic, clean with no visible damage.
- Trucks and axles on the locomotive and tender have been buffed and polished to remove any corrosion or wear.
- Connector holding the locomotive and tender together is intact and properly screwed down.
- Motor located in the tender car, strong and responsive.
- Tender car in excellent condition.
- Steps on the tender car are intact
- Hook / Horn coupler in rear of tender car.
- Testing revealed strong power forward and in reverse. No binding of gears or wheels.
- HOWEVER: Full disclosure...(see video) the locomotive / tender runs well in forward and reverse BUT, when it is pressed to it's fastest speed, it will sound loud. This may be due to the replacement drive shaft I created to link the tender motor to the locomotive. I believe if an original Bachmann drive shaft were to be acquired, it may eliminate the loud sound.
- Original box for the locomotive / tender, as well as the original Bachmann paperwork.
- Soundtraxx Sound Chip Included - As I am not skilled at wiring for added sound effects, I decided to include this chip for anyone interested / skilled enough to try to make it work.
Overall, this locomotive set is close to new condition and looks great on the track (see video). Either for a veteran model railroad collector OR a newbie just getting into model railroads, this steam locomotive is a great addition to anyone's collection.
NOTE: You will find a small accumulation of metal shaving under the tender car as a result of cleaning to the track for proper testing. Much of it was removed, but a few small pieces may still be present.
This locomotive is in excellent condition and ready to hit the tracks! Modern diesel locomotives may be the workhorses of model trains, but the steam locomotives represent a different style, when locomotives were more the thoroughbred, transporting passengers and freight across the country. Most Jupiter locomotives found online now are used and have significant wear from regular usage, but this one doesn't.
Shipping for this locomotive / tender car will be via US Priority Mail for US bidders, while Overseas bidders are welcome to buy, and will receive orders via eBay's Overseas Shipping Program. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll respond as best as I can. Good Luck!
