Autograph of B.F. Overton with his designation “Chief of Chickasaws” on a 2 7/8 x 4 ¼ card.
The
Chickasaw Nation, home to a Native American people, is located in south central
Oklahoma. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN OVERTON
served in both the house and the senate of the Chickasaw legislature and has
served as a delegate for the Chickasaw tribe to Washington numerous times
throughout his career. In 1874, Overton became a candidate for governor,
opposing the incumbent Cyrus Harris. The two were opposite in leadership styles
and political factions. Overton was aggressive.
But both were astute politicians. Overton won the tense 1874 election
and was re-elected in 1876, 1882. Overton was a firm advocate for the
improvement of Chickasaw education and established the Chickasaw neighborhood school
system.
Light
