In 1897, Japan adopted a new rifle, named the Arisaka after Colonel Arisaka, calibre  6.5 mm, together with a new bayonet, M1897 or Type 30.  Early Type 30 bayonets were of high quality manufacture, with thick blueing on metal parts.  During the latter stages of WW2, Japan, starved for war materiel, due to the loss of territories & the aggression of the US Fleet submarines, adopted 'economy' measures during production of the type 30 bayonet.  The 'hook' quillon was replaced with a 'straight' quillon, the 'bird's beak' pommel was square, wood grips were flat slabs, blades were half sharpened & un-fullered.
