Plate XI ( of 12 ) Illustration for Samuel Butler's Hudibras, William Hogarth & Samuel Butler , 18th century,  hand-coloured - 55 x 35 cm - engraved by  T. Cook.

William Hogarth illustrated the story of a sad adventurer named Hudibras in twelve engravings. His source was the satirical, faux-heroic poem of Samuel Butler, written in the vein of Cervantes and Rabelais. Butler's poem ridicules the Puritan party's attempts to overthrow the British monarchy during the Great Civil War of 1640 and exposes the hypocrisy and pretensions of the Presbyterians, Independents, and zealots who hoped to establish themselves as leaders. Here Hudibras appears in this large crowd as a masked doll about to be burned. A row of London butchers provides the backdrop for a protest against the Rump Parliament, a political body that replaced much of the previous government during the English Civil War. Indeed, the demonstrators at this historic event in 1659 burned cattle remains in the streets, as well as political effigies.
