Embossed pint milk bottle from the New London Dairy
Co. of New London, Connecticut, circa 1920s to 1930s. The embossed text on the
front, set inside a circle, reads New London Dairy Co., 34 Golden St., New
London, Conn., with One Pint arched above it. There are small circles on the
shoulder back and front too. This doesn’t seem to be the New London Dairy Co.
that belonged to Louis Schwartz in the early 1900s. His business was located at
8 Bank Street in 1910 and perhaps was still there in 1920. I believe a new
creamery was built for him at 90 Main Street about that later date. He also had
a creamery in Chesterfield, Connecticut, and perhaps Yantic too at different
dates. A 1932 edition of the American Creamery and Poultry Produce Review includes
two businesses named the New London Dairy Co. in its list of New London
creameries, the one at 90 Main Street and another at 34 Golden Street. That
list also has the New London and Mohegan Dairies located at 73 Jefferson
Avenue. I can only find that one reference to a New London Dairy Co. at 34
Golden Street. That building would have been located by the municipal parking
lot, across from the Golden Street Carriage House. This is a dug bottle and so
is only in good condition with scratches, minor dings, and a little bit of rust
staining. I don’t see any chips or cracks. A nice early New London CT milk!
