The author was the Chaplain to the 53rd Inf Bn. Follows the 53rd Battalion
AIF history from its formation in Egypt through the various battles. The title
of this book is attributed to the fact that the CO ordered his men to polish
their steel helmets with whale oil so that they would shine! The 53rd Battalion
were much respected for their fine services at Peronne, Le Catelet, Bullecourt,
Polygon Wood, and the breaking of the Hindenburg Line. These battles are all
covered in this book. Appendixes, Honours & Awards. At Wars end the Battalion
Casualties numbered 647 killed, 1647 wounded.
Since 1919......Although a smaller Battalion History still the Best for 53rd Battalion medal or genealogy research !
