Specific title : Types of Emin Pasha's People

From the set " Stanleys Expedition " produced by Alfred Underhill (dissolving view artist 23a Clarendon Road, Croydon). 
The slide is an exceptionally hand coloured illustration relating to the expedition and dates to between 1889 - 1890 ( Alfred Underhill's shop was at 23a Clarendon Road between 1888 and 1890. This slide being quite literality produced straight after the expedition had ended.

The expedition was one of the last major expeditions into the interior of Africa in the nineteenth century, ostensibly to the relief of Emin Pasha; General Charles Gordons besieged governor of Equatoria, threatened by Mahdist forces. The expedition was led by Henry Morton Stanley and came to be both celebrated for its ambition in crossing " Darkest Africa " and notorious for the deaths of so many of its members and the disease unwittingly left in its wake.
