This is a wonderful find of a deeply hand carved, antique hunter cuckoo clock that was created about 65 years ago in the Black Forest of "Germany." The clock is a stunning survivor and has a remarkable, rare, blended walnut and color finish. It's the perfect size too measuring about 13 1/2" high (from the tip of the antlers on top to the bottom of the game bag and not counting the weights, chains, or pendulum), about 7" at its deepest point, and about 7 1/2" at its widest point. The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood which has been the choice of clock carvers since the 1870's. There is a beautifully carved, colorful wooden game bird mounted to the left of the dial and an equally impressive carved wooden rabbit to the right of the dial as well as a carved hunting bag at the bottom of the case complete with straps. The whole scene is made to look like Oak tree branches complete with five hand carved, colorful Oak leaves and branches adorning the case; very nice! There is also a detailed deer head atop the clock complete with antlers and two wooden shotguns mounted underneath in a criss-cross fashion. The dial has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and a pair of matching, fancy hands to point out the time. The origin, "Germany" appears in small block letters on the lower dial. The wooden back is secured with a metal latch. It removes easily to allow access to the mechanical, early, rack style, weight driven movement  bearing the "Made in Germany" point of origin. A weight driven movement simply means the weights need to be pulled occasionally in order to wind the clock and cuckoo/chime activities. The wood bellow tubes and tops look to be in good shape and they make good sound too. At the bottom of each hour, the wooden door above the dial opens and a colorful bird stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock and closing the door. The bird reappears at the top of each hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the clock and closing the door; absolutely fascinating! The clock works very well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos and chimes as it should. Keep in mind that even though it looks like it's a newer clock, it is not. This is an old clock and we don't know the service history despite the movement appearing to have had some maintenance in the past. The clock may need service or repairs we don't see here once it arrives at its new home which is why we recommend to our clock buyers to do the simple maintenance as the factory recommends...once every three years. Doing so will keep a classic clock like this one running strong for years to come. I've looked the clock over fairly well and can't find any damage or missing parts; maybe a few nicks here and there but that's about it. It is a great clock and wonderful on display! The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights, and a hand carved colorful wooden oak leaf pendulum too. This clock is just remarkable and a great example of the artistic quality found among German carvers for over 160 years. Bid with absolute confidence; I have a great deal of confidence in knowing that you will love this clock!
