For sale is an amazing desk almost certainly made for a lady to use for writing her letters, etc in the 19th century . One rarely ever see these anymore not that they were common at all at any point. This one here is made of wood that has a black paint to it and is decorated with lots of brass or bronze design elements applied to the wood and around all these absolutely amazing porcelain plaques all over the piece. There are 20 porcelain plaques - the bottom front is a drawer that has two rectangular plaques on it of people in a landscape surrounding with a gold trim around the scene and an amazing blue trim around the edge. The plaques are held in place by brass or bronze mounts as well as being glued to the wood. Each of the plaques is 8.5 inches wide and about 1.875 inches tall or at least the visible part. Then there are small plaques to the corners with applied flowers in them and the same trim. Each of those is about 1.375 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall. The side of the cabinet has two more of those applied floral plaques to each as well as a long rectangular plaque being about 12 inches long and 2 inches tall. The outside door of the cabinet that folds down has four corner shaped plaques to them with angels sitting in clouds doing different things, These are just superb! They are 4.125 inches tall and 5.75 inches wide with that odd shape to them. The best plaque is obviously that huge oval one in the center of the door being 11.75 inches wide and 9.5 inches tall. It has a couple in a landscape surrounding with some sheep and buildings. Same gold and blue trim as the others. This one is the only one that came loose when I has the piece worked on and it is marked with the KPM mark as shown. Once you open the cabinet up there are three spaces to either side with an opening in the center. The top spaces are open with the bottom ones having drawers in them. Each of the four drawers has its own porcelain plaque to it as shown. All with couples in a landscape surrounding and the same blue and gold trim design. The center opening has a wooden arch with a nice brass / bronze design to it and a porcelain plaque as the floor with a couple in a landscape surrounding and the same trim design. Two columns flank the opening with some flowers to them and blue and gold trim. The drawer and the front piece have a keyhole and while I have two keys only the front opening one works. The drawer one works occasionally and seems the right age and look for the key but it's not the perfect fit. The other key seems to be a replacement since it looks rather boring. The top of the cabinet has little columns to it with the corner pieces being rectangular. The smaller round columns have a blue, pink and gold design to them while the rectangular ones have little floral designs to them as well as a blue and gold trim. Each of these have a white KPM figurine on top of them. Different months / Zodiac signs. These are more moderns than the actual desk. There is another figurine on the bottom where the leg stabilizers intersect. All porcelain plaques are hand painted and amazingly they are all in great condition. A bit of chipping to the small applied floral ones and a tiny flaw to the giant oval one as shown. The entire cabinet is in great shape. I had the brass / bronze pieces brought back to a nice shine as they were badly oxidized and the wood itself repaired in some areas but not perfectly as I did not want the piece to look new. One small section of the brass "pearl" trim design is missing on the left side towards the back. Some flaws to the wood but it looks amazing! Two small columns on top have a break in the center that was glued and the figurine on the very bottom has had a repair to the wreath it is holding. It's one of the coolest pieces I have ever come across. Very unusual. The non white figures and box in the main photo sitting on top of the cabinets are not part of it. And yes I know the photos aren't great but my camera is designed for closeups of small items. I can text you better ones if you are interested. The entire piece about 45 inches tall not including the pedestals with the figurines on top which would add another 7 inches or so. The desk is 27.25 inches wide and 24.75 inches deep. There is a signature under the oval plaque as shown on the wood but I cannot make it out. Likely for the person that made the desk. I am not shipping this piece so if you are interested it is a pick up or you will have to figure out the shipping. 19thC Germany
