A VERY SCARCE SOUTH AFRICA 1834-53 TO A ROYAL MARINE OF H.M.S. CASTOR WHO WAS LANDED WITH THE NAVAL FORCE IN 1851

 

SOUTH AFRICA 1834-53 ‘M. WADE. PRIVATE. R.M.’

 

Martin Wade is confirmed as a Private Royal Marines aboard H.M.S. Castor during the Third Kaffir War and was one of the 88 men from this ship to actually be landed with the Naval Force in 1851.

 

Of the approximately 10,000 South Africa 1834-51 medals issued, 964 medals were issued to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, 93 of which to the latter. Of these medals only approximately 135 were issued to men who served ashore

 

Condition brooch marks to obverse and reconstituted with copy suspension but very scarce
