It always feels a bit scary hitting play on a Merzbow release. And we mean that in the best possible way, of course. That sense of caution and stepping into the unknown is particularly heightened when dealing with brand new work from the master of noise and abrasive sound. Here debuting on the equally infallible and wildly exploratory Modern Obscure Music, the man like Masami Akita has more than delivered. One of the most respected artists working with intimidatingly-sized walls of distortion, reverberation, and refrain, when he's not writing words or campaigning for animal rights, two tracks here - or, more accurately, two parts of a whole - are thick enough to lose yourself in, like the sounds you might hear stepping through the portal into another dimension. Disorientating and, in many ways, not of this place.
