HISTORY OF THE IOLITE STONE

Iolite, or cordierite, is a stone belonging to the family of silicates. It contains magnesium, silicate and aluminum in large proportion. It is a photo-reactive rock that cannot be dissolved in water or acid and is fire resistant. Although its appearance to the naked eye appears to sport a purple tint overall, vitreous shards in lights of blue and yellow can be seen in it with optical equipment. In the British Museum, the largest cut natural crystal can be observed. It has a weight of 855 carats.

The iolite owes its name to the Greek "ios" which means purple and which refers to its intense color. It was first used by the Vikings. According to legend, the famous explorer Ragnar Lodbrok used it as a filter to catch sunlight when the weather was overcast. When present on weathered materials, it becomes pinite, as it transforms into microcrystalline aggregates of muscovite or clorite. To find cordierite, it is therefore often preferable to rely on the presence of pinite alteration near fractures or yellow pleochroic halon with inclusions of hematite or zircon. This rare mineral is often associated with other rocks of the same type as well as the following minerals: biotite, corundum, hematite, muscovite, sillimanite, potassium feldspars, andalusite, etc. Its main deposits are visible in the southern hemisphere, notably in Brazil, India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Myanmar.
