For sale is a fun knife with the porcelain handle made by
Chantilly in the first half of the 18th century . The handle has an
octagonal shape to it and is made of softpaste porcelain which is hand
painted with a Chinoiserie style design derived from earlier Japanese
porcelain. The colors and design are superb and I have not seen this one
here before. The handle has a young boy on it holding an umbrella with a
bird next to him and some flowers all around. There is even a little
bug. The design is completely outlined in black which is important for
them to be the real deal. The metal blade is made of iron and marked
with an impressed tulip looking mark as shown for the blacksmith that
made the metal parts. The ferrule looks to be silver. The knife is
amazingly complete with the blade which isn't that common. The handle
has suffered some wear and cracks as shown. There are two cracks coming
from the top end about halfway into the handle and one that comes downs a
little bit and then turns to meet one of the straight cracks. A common
issue on these early pieces by this maker. The metal parts have some
oxidation to them. The blade goes through the center all the way through
and thus you have the little silver piece at the end of the handle as
shown. The knife is 9.375 inches long of which the visible part of the
porcelain handle being about 3.625 inches long. French France antique cutlery utensil
