PHOENIX BIRD CHINAWARE - BOOK THREE – A Collector’s Encyclopedia of Its Past, Its Pieces, Its Potteries  by Joan Collett Oates, self-published by the author, 1986.

Profusely illustrated with approximately 150 black-and-white photographs, this early out-of-print book pictures and describes phoenix bird china including information on makers and marks.   This book covers the background of this pattern and reviews many of the early makers.    Here is a fine pictorial guide featuring brief captions that explain size and pattern, with occasional cross-referencing. Of special note is the chapter “Other ‘Phoenix’ Patterns Worth Looking For” which covers: Fazen, Flower Head, Owl Like, Bird of Paradise, Rice bird, Cobalt Bird, Takahashi’s Bird, and more.  There is also a section on “Marks and Backstamps.”  The collector of fine china will find this a wonderful source book and identification guide and will want to include it in a permanent reference library.
