In October 1988, two gold chains went missing from Sean Sutton’s room at the old Wildcat Lodge. He filed a police report, which triggered an alert for Lexington pawn shops to be on the lookout. Kemp became ensnared when he hocked the jewelry at one of the shops for $700. Sean and Eddie Sutton declined to press charges, saying they could not positively identify the chains. The case was closed – but the damage was done. Kemp’s bags were packed and his Kentucky career was over before it started.

“I wish I never filed that report,” Sutton says. “Not worth it at all for the ways it impacted his life and the negative publicity it brought to him and the way it hurt our program. Looking back, I wouldn’t have done it. I think the person who took the jewelry was dishonest with Shawn about who it belonged to, and he talked Shawn into selling it for him. Otherwise, knowing Shawn, I just don’t believe he would’ve done that. It was such a bad deal. My dad was sick about it, and so were all the players.”

What if this unfortunate situation had never reared its ugly head? What if Shawn stayed at The University of Kentucky, played alongside Rex Chapman and competed for a National Championship?
