Antique Jean Gille Biscuit Porcelain Large Figurine Porcelaine Figure French

This product data sheet is originally written in English.

For sale is a really fun large figure made by Jean Gille of France in the mid 19th century . It does not have the typical raised blue pad mark but is instead marked as shown with a mark we all know was used by almost all makers at some point for obvious reasons but the quality of this piece in the unglazed porcelain with all that painted, raised and molded detail can only point to the one maker that made the best biscuit figurines during this period in this style - Jean Gille ! His successor Vion & Baury also made nice pieces but the quality already went down with them so I don't think it is by them. Either way - an amazing figurine of a Russian Jewish family (I believe) with the father sitting in a chair on a podium with a desk in front of him with a book on it, a music sheet hanging off the front and an inkwell next to the book. A boy is standing / leaning on the side of the desk with a bench next to him that has a fallen basket of flowers on it. Another basket that has fallen over with flowers in it in front of the child with the mother sitting on a bench holding an umbrella in one hand and a closed basket under the other arm. The detail of this piece is superb - from the flowers on the chair to the wood grain of the desk and wooden planks of the base. Top notch piece of a large size and in great condition. A really nice example of this style of porcelain! The figure is about 11 inches tall, 9.5 inches wide and 9 inches deep. Quite heavy. In amazing shape for the size and age. A little wear to the yamulke and the hair of the child, some minor issues with the flowers in the baskets, the handle of the mother's basket is missing (not obvious at all), there is some odd added porcelain on his left hand and a color strip missing on the chair rest - I assume it held a writing feather at some point or something like this and the base edge has some flat chips to it - the largest being in the front but a little paint would hide it perfectly since it is really thin. Firing crack to the back as shown that was filled during the production. Marked underneath as shown as well as some incised marks as shown. Little doubt as to who made it and it is definitely French in origin and mid 19th century. 19thC France
