La Matchless era una delle più antiche case motociclistiche britanniche. La sede della società e il luogo di produzione erano a Plumstead (Londra). L'azienda fu attiva tra il 1899 e il 1966, quando la produzione di motociclette con questo marchio venne interrotta.

La prima moto fu realizzata dalla Matchless nel 1899 e la produzione vera e propria iniziò nel 1901. Inizialmente venivano vendute con questo marchio le moto prodotte dalla Collier & Sons, società costituita da H.H. Collier e dai figli Henry e Charlie. Come marchio venne scelta una M alata. Come molte altre case motociclistiche inizialmente la ditta produceva biciclette.
