Britannia has been the national symbol of Great Britain since the 18th century. However her story goes back much
further. The first Britannia was struck on bronze coins by the Romans in the first century A.D.

The modern Britannia was designed by famed coin artist Philip Nathan. The first Britannia was struck in gold and
released in 1987.  It would be another decade until the Britannia was struck in silver. Since 2012, the Britannia has
featured the same design. That same year, the purity was increased from 95.6 to .999 .

Prior to 2012, odd numbered years featured different designs struck in low numbers. These are among the most popular and sought after years. From 1997 thru 2009, mintage never exceeded 100,000. A drop In the bucket compared to an average of 15 - 20 million minted nowadays.

The featured 2003 Britannia is among the lowest with a mintage of only 73,261. Its one of the most highly-sought after Britannia's from collectors and coin enthusiasts around the world.

The fourth Effigy of the late Queen is on the obverse with a close up of Britannia wearing a Corinthian helmet on the reverse. The weight, purity and content is also inscribed on the reverse. Similar to other years, the inscriptions are are sideways behind the helmet rather than below.

The featured coin is in spectacular condition. To find one and better condition, it will need a 70 in the description. No sales pitch here.... An absolute beauty with no defects to the naked eye. The coin you see is the coin you will receive in a new airtight..    ( Oh you just gotta love that cartwheel effect..)
