DESIGNED AT WETA Workshop in Wellington by Sacha Lees, this stamp sets include a full-colour brochure containing extensive background information on these exciting stamp releases and the epic movie they honour. The New Zealand Post 2001 philatelic release of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ was the only stamp issue endorsed by the film’s director, Peter Jackson and officially licensed by New Line Productions.

The 2001 Fellowship of the Ring Ultimate Collection includes 212 FotR stamps - one each of the following items:



Presentation Pack - 18 stamps in deluxe folio containing self-adhesive set, Ringwraith gummed first day cover and six miniature sheets.

This deluxe Presentation Pack contain several scarce items no longer available separately. The triple-folding folio includes 18 Lord of the Rings stamps: Gummed First Day Cover, Self-adhesive Stamps Set with official movie logos, and six Miniature Sheets featuring key scenes from the awards-winning ‘The Lord of the Rings’ movie. Presentation Packs additionally provide in-depth details and facts on the LotR stamps, Middle-earth races, characters, and motion pictures they honour.

The First authorised commemorative Presentation Pack contains three sets of the popular ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ movie stamps. Each limited edition FotR folio includes 18 stamps: First Day Cover with complete gummed stamp set and Dec. 4, 2001 cancellation postmarks, complete self-adhesive Stamps Set with ‘Fellowship of the Ring’ movie logos, and complete set of six Miniature Sheets. Folio measures: 8.25 H x 9.45 W inches; 21 x 24 cm when closed, 8.25 H x 23.6 W inches; 21 x 60 cm fully opened. Issue date: 4 December 2001.


First Day Cover: Self-adhesive - Envelope depicts The Fellowship on the march in silhouette affixed with complete 2001 set of self-adhesive Fellowship of the Ring stamps postmarked on the first day of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ stamp issue. Designed for postal vending machines, self-adhesives are smaller (26 x 37 mm; 1 x 1 1/2") than the corresponding gummed stamps (25 x 50 mm; 1 x 2"), and in a more natural portrait frame versus the landscape framing of the gummed stamps.

First Day Cover: Gummed - Envelope featuring a Ringwraith, one of the servants of Sauron, affixed with set of six gummed Fellowship of the Ring stamps postmarked on the first day of issue.

First Day Covers are pictorial envelopes which are issued and stamped with a specifically-designed cancellation postmark that is only used for that day and issue. The cancellation for these Fellowship of the Ring First Day Covers is a stylized Eye of Sauron encircled by the words ‘The Fellowship of The Ring, First Day of Issue, 4 December 2001, Stamps Centre Wanganui New Zealand’. First Day Covers are very collectable since they are rare and hard to obtain after issuance. This issue was only released in New Zealand and sold out quickly. Approximately 16,000 Fellowship First Day Covers were issued by NZ Post.


Maximum Postcards - 6 postcards with first day postmarked gummed stamps introduce key characters and scenes from ‘Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring’ movie, with related gummed ‘LotR: FotR’ stamps and first day (Dec 4, 2001) cancellation postmark. Maximum card actual size: 4.13 H x 5.71 W inches; 105 x 145 mm.

Postcard: Gandalf the Grey (Sir Ian McKellen) find solace in Rivendell, Stamp design: Walking in the garden of Isengard, the wizard Gandalf the Grey tells Saruman the White (Christopher Lee) that the long lost One Ring has been found, unaware that Saruman has succumbed to its evil power and also means to obtain it.

Postcard: Lady Of The Light Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) before the Mirror, Lothlórien, Stamp design: The Lady of the Golden Wood, Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), founded and became Queen of Lorien during the earlier War of the Ring. Offered the One Ring by Frodo, the Queen Of Elves refused knowing too well its ability to corrupt even the most pure of heart.

Postcard: Shocked patrons in the Inn of the Prancing Pony, Bree - Frodo (Elijah Woods) has just vanished into thin air, Stamp design: Frodo Baggins - The Ringbearer, accompanied by his good friend Samwise ‘Sam’ Gamgee (Sean Astin) enjoys an ale in the Inn of the Prancing Pony, while nervously awaiting Gandalf, unaware of his imprisonment by Saruman.

Postcard: After being wounded by a Morgul knife while escaping the pursuing Ringwraiths, Frodo awakens at Rivendell, unaware of having been on the brink of death, Stamp design: The Guardian of Rivendell.

Postcard: A tender moment between Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and immortal Elven princess Arwen Undómiel (Liv Tyler) at Rivendell, Stamp design: The mysterious Strider watches Frodo and company from the shadows in the Inn of the Prancing Pony. He’s later revealed to be Aragorn, son of Arathorn, and rightful Heir of Gondor.

Postcard: Balin’s Tomb - The Fellowship stands its ground in preparation for an overwhelming attack, Stamp design: Boromir (Sean Bean) of Gondor blows the ancient Horn of his people to warn of a savage Uruk-Hai raiding party led by the huge Orc, Lurtz. Boromir gave his life defending Pippin and Merry shortly after Frodo left The Fellowship at Amon Hen.


Stamp Booklet - 10 self-adhesive stamps in various denominations, Strip with complete set of 2001 Fellowship of the Ring self-adhesive stamps and official Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring logo. Self-adhesives are a different size (1 x 1.5 inches; 26 x 37 mm) and aspect ratio than the gummed stamps (1 x 2 inches; 25 x 50 mm).

80c stamp design: Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), the mysterious Lady of the Golden Wood, Queen of Lorien, also known as The White Lady. Although offered the One Ring by Frodo, she refused knowing too well its power to corrupt even the pure at heart.

$1.30 Stamp design: The Guardian of Rivendell stands guard over Frodo who lies asleep, having been near fatally wounded by a Morgul knife while escaping the pursuing Ringwraiths.

$1.50 Stamp design: One of the secretive band of Rangers who roam the wild lands, Strider (Viggo Mortensen) watches the hobbits from the shadows of the Inn of the Prancing Pony. He’s later revealed to be Aragorn - heir to Gondor’s throne.

$2.00 Stamp design: Boromir of Gondor (Sean Bean) blows the ancient Horn of his people to warn of a raiding party of savage Uruk-Hai. He fell defending Pippin and Merry, shortly after Frodo left the Fellowship at Amon Hen to strike out for Mordor alone.


Stamp sheets - 6 sheets each containing 25 mint stamps in standard denominations, EACH SHEET INCLUDES a different stamp design featuring key characters and scenes from Peter Jackson’s The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King movies. Available in denominations of 40c, 80c, 90c, $1.30, $1.50, and $2.00, each sheet of 25 stamps (five rows by five columns) measures 11 x 6 1/8 inches; 28 x 15.5 cm and is bordered by a decorative gutter strip (selvage) which differs between the three commemorative issues. These Fellowship of the Ring Stamp Sheets were only issued and marketed in New Zealand for a short time before they sold out.


40 cent Sheetlet - 10 Gandalf Saruman stamps with unique selvage (border strip). This highly collectible philatelic sheetlet features the two main protagonists from Tolkien’s immortal Middle-earth saga: the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Sir Ian McKellen) informs Saruman the White (Christoper Lee) at Isengard that the long lost One Ring has been found, unaware that Saruman also seeks it for the immense power it wields. Actual size sheetlet: 5.12 H x 6.1 W inches; 13 x 15.5 cm. Unique Fellowship of The Ring stamp collectible as no other sheetlets were issued for the subsequent two films.

Gummed stamps are slightly larger than the self adhesives and not as closely cropped given the more accommodating aspect ratio.
