1916 was a tough year in modern history - The Great War was raging across Europe with a high volume of casualties on the battlefield, unimaginable horrors which would continue for a further two years.


Continental imperialism would come to an end with this conflict, many of the royal houses of Germany, Austria, Hungary and surroundings suffering obliteration. One stalwart: the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha with King George V of Great Britain and Queen Mary of Teck at its helm would survive, but not without considerable Anglification: The Royal edifice became the House of Windsor to avoid German connotations.


In 1917 during the Russian Revolution, the King declined the plea of the Tsar and his young family safe passage and exile to England, all of them perished and the King reportedly never forgave himself.
