This old handmade Suzani embroidered wall or tent hanging is a whopping 151” long, or about 12 ½ feet! It comes from the Caucasus region of Central Asia in the former Soviet Union, in the traditional tribal areas near Afghanistan. It likely dates to the early to mid 20th century, based on the materials used.

The gorgeous green, gold, blue, black and white needlework, done in a dense crewel stitch, really pop against the deep red background. This was expertly made using cotton threads. There are many places where the craftswoman changed her mind and the hand drawn design is faintly visible (see close-up pics).

There are little fabric loops sewn to the top for hanging. I use little white cup hooks from the hardware store (see pic). This piece is light enough to not need wall anchors.

This would look fantastic as a patio or balcony decoration. These are also sometimes repurposed as throw pillows or other Boho Chic home décor accents.

Condition is much better condition than many of the old suzanis and this displays well. There is one area toward the middle that is discolored white, likely due to an imperfect dyeing process. There’s some minor general wear.

This has been thoughly cleaned and is ready to use.
